‘Eurovision : Australia Decides 2020’ hits our screens tonight, and we’ve been busy checking out this year’s entries.
Ten songs by ten Aussie performers will compete to be Australia’s entry to the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in May in the Netherlands.
We’ve been checking out each of this year’s entries as part of a three part series (parts one and two are HERE and HERE).
Let’s take a look at the final trio vying for you all-important vote.
DIANA ROUVAS : Can We Make Heaven
Diana is no stranger to Australian audiences; after a stint on ‘The Voice’ back in 2012, she returned last year and ended up winning the whole thing.
‘Eurovision : Australia Decides’ gives Aussies another opportunity to see Diana at full pelt, singing a song she hopes will win over audiences and result in her being shipped off to the Netherlands to compete for Eurovision glory.
Naturally, she’s going to be able to tap into the Greek fanbase across Europe, so douze points for that point alone.
But will Australian audiences give her the green light to go?
According to Diana herself, “‘Can We Make Heaven’ was inspired by the personal lessons we learn in life and how I feel we can choose to be empowered, choose to grow, create, manifest and be the light in the darkness.”
MITCH TAMBO : Together
Sony Music know what they’re doing, don’t they? Appealing to the Eurovision crowd with a burst of didgeridoo and a heady mixture of pop in both English and traditional indigenous Gamilaraay language.
Eurovision competitions past have seen many countries blend their native tongue with English in the hope of winning over a wider audience.
“‘Together’ is a really important song to me,” Mitch reveals. “It’s the culmination of everything I want to do with my music – to bring people from all walks of life, cultures and creeds together with a message of love, especially when so many are going through such tough times.
“It’s the perfect song for Eurovision, which is all about uniting people through music no matter what language they speak – or sing. I can’t wait to get out on that stage and perform this song for Australia, and the world.”
Mitch, of course, appeared in last year’s series of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ and performed a stirring rendition of John Farnham’s classic ‘You’re The Voice’.
JACK VIDGEN : I Am King, I Am Queen
Jack Vidgen is another who’s no stranger to reality show audiences in Australia.
Back in 2011, he won the fifth season of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ and came back eight years later to compete on the latest season of ‘The Voice’.
He’ll be competing again tonight, performing his latest single ‘I Am King, I Am Queen’.
“It’s a real representation of me and everything I stand for and I think that everyone, young and old, will be able to relate to and take inspiration from this song,” Jack reveals. “I hope that the Eurovision audiences love it as much as I do.”
‘Eurovision : Australia Decides’ is telecast live on SBS tonight from 8:30pm.
