Believe it or not, but the ladies from Brisbane outfit MVP have used just one instrument on their new single ‘Give It Straight Back’.
And that instrument is the voice.
Yes, released on Friday, ‘Give It Straight Back’ features no strings, no keys, no synths, no bass, no percussion… just the sounds of the quintet’s voices, albeit with some finger clicks and a little electronic trickery thrown in for good measure.
As for the meaning behind the song, “it tells the tale of a relationship that’s got a bad reputation attached to it, but you can’t stop yourself from wanting it,” they explains.
“It talks about the push and pull you’d experience in a rocky relationship, all with a feel that makes you wanna move.”
Sonically, it’s all rather captivating trying to unpick how they’ve managed to craft each of the sounds with just their voices.
We don’t know how they do it, but ‘Give It Straight Back’ is a compelling listen.
