Get to know Adam Noviello, a fresh new artist out of Melbourne who’s just dropped their debut solo single ‘Heretic’.
It’s a spicy little number that celebrates being gender diversity and that celebration flows not only through the entire song, but also its colourful music video.
Now it’s time for some introductions… let’s get to know a little more about Adam Noviello with a fresh batch of questions.
01. Name : Adam Noviello.
02. Where are you based? Melbourne.
03. How did you get your start in music? Years ago during a brief stint on ‘Neighbours’, I worked with an actor that was also a guitarist. We got together with another mate of his one day and just jammed, until eventually there were five of us and were a band!
We were super young and super keen. We gigged for a little while and actually wrote some gorgeous songs together, and to this day we’re family. But that was my first taste at playing live music and performing my own songs. I’ve been hooked ever since!
04. Give us five words to best describe you as an artist. Honest, adventurous, fierce, passionate, queer AF!
05. Tell us a little bit about your sound and how it developed. The sound of my current tracks differ from my earlier songs, which I’m not mad about at all! I’ve always strived to write from an authentic and honest place, that has not changed.
But I’m very much leaning in to electronic influences these days, and playing with the plethora of sounds we can make in the digital age. The focus is on lyrics and the stories I want to tell, but if I can make people dance and vibe at the same time, that’s super ideal.
06. What’s your earliest musical memory? Ooooo, if I was to go super throwback on you, it was when I found my mum and dad’s Tina Turner CDs! I was very very young, and quite clearly camp, and I spent hours dancing around to her ‘Simply The Best’ greatest hits album. To this day I find Tina’s voice and her energy so inspirational. Such passion.
07. Who have been your musical influences? On my new single ‘Heretic’, and the soon-to-be-released EP that is comes from (stay tuned!), I have been very much influenced by artists like Troye Sivan, James Blake and Lana Del Rey. Moody, dark, dance pop. But as an artist in general, I take great inspiration from Judy Garland, David Bowie and Lady Gaga.
08. What are your favourite songs of all time? Gosh, that’s such a massive question! To name a few, I’d say : ‘The Man That Got Away’ – Judy Garland, ‘Private Dancer’ – Tina Turner, ‘Life On Mars’ – David Bowie, ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell’ – Lana Del Rey.
09. What’s your favourite lyric of all time (and where does it come from)? HA! It actually comes from ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell’ by Lana. “God damn man-child. You fucked me so good that I almost said ‘I love you’”… I mean, that’s pretty iconic right?!
10. Who are your top three favourite pop artists of all time? David Bowie, Madonna and Lady Gaga.
11. What’s the one song you’d kill to release a cover of? I’ve always wanted to record a cover of an old love song called ‘If I Love Again’. It makes me cry every time I hear it. I’d strip it right back to a guitar and just sing it from my soul.
12. Who would your dream duet be with? Lana. Definitely Lana. I see us destroying bottles of red wine while we worked on a song together. Heaven.
13. Where’s your favourite place to listen to music? Honestly? Anywhere. I am that friend that no matter the occasion I have the UE Boom speaker in my bag and a playlist ready to go. Music makes everything better.
14. What was the first album you ever bought? I don’t remember the first album, but the first single I bought was ‘Baby… One More Time’ by Britney Spears. How camp!!
15. What would your chosen career be if music wasn’t an option? I’ve been very fortunate to work a lot in professional musical theatre and in 2020 my feature film debut was released. So if I couldn’t sing, I’d love to act full time.
16. What’s the best advice you’ve been given in your career? A friend of mine once told me that show business was a rollercoaster, not a ladder. That has really stuck with me. Being an artist is a ride. It’s up and down, left to right, and if you accept that, it’s a truly wonderful world to explore and pursue.
17. What’s been the highlight of your musical journey so far? The first time I listened to my upcoming EP all the way through was such a special moment. My producer and I sat back and played the six tracks through and experienced it together in its total glory. It was emotional, cathartic and all kinds of wonderful.
18. What’s been the strangest experience you’ve had in the business? I think it would have to be working throughout the last two hellish Covid years. I toured a musical in early 2021, and travelling around the country and doing a show in that time was super strange.
Looking out to an audience of people wearing masks and not being able to see their response to the show was odd as hell. But I am super grateful to have been working when so many people in our industry have suffered at the hands of the pandemic.
19. If you could trade places with any artist in the world right now, who would it be? I simply couldn’t say. I am the only artist I desire to be. Every artist brings to the world what they bring, I bring what I bring, and there should be room and a platform for us all. Art is art, and there is never too much of it.
20. Tell us about your debut release. ‘Heretic’ is my debut single as a solo artist. It is a pop banger that speaks about the beauty of gender diversity and the beauty of discovering and loving yourself in that space.
Yes, it’s a song for queer people, but it’s a fierce dance track that I hope everyone enjoys and sees themselves in. We all deserve self love, and we all deserve to celebrate ourselves. I hope people blast it, dance to it and have a ball with it.
21. How have you spent your time during the pandemic? Like everyone, the initial lockdowns were tough. The musical I was doing at the time was cut short and the show I was meant to start mid 2020 was cancelled. So there was lots of wine and Mario Kart there for awhile. I watched my entire industry shut down and the overall hope for showbiz dwindle. It hurt. But, as the saying goes, ‘the show must go on’, and indeed it has.
Artists are a resilient bunch, and it’s been so beautiful to see art, music and culture rise from the ashes of the pandemic. Obviously there are still obstacles (ZERO government support to name one!), but people will always need art and escapism, and I am so proud to be a part of it.
22. What do your future plans involve once we’re back to some semblance of normalcy? I have a few exciting projects lined up for 2022, which I shan’t talk about just yet. But I will say, I plan to release more music and to continue exploring my life as a singer and songwriter. I have stories to tell and I am so thrilled to be telling them.
23. Where can our audience catch you live? I am debuting my new single ‘Heretic’ at Midsumma Festival here in Melbourne this Sunday! So, people can come to the picnic stage at 6pm and have a dance with me. I can’t wait.
24. Give us the final sell on the debut release. Celebrating gender queerness and all gender nonconforming humans, ‘Heretic’ is the new pop/dance anthem set to ignite hearts, minds and dance floors.
‘Heretic’ is on all major streaming platforms with an accompanying music video featuring a cast entirely made up of non-binary/gender fluid/transgender/gender nonconforming humans.
‘Heretic’ represents a celebration of gender queerness. Lyrically the song speaks of my former feelings of betraying the gender I was assigned. Not fitting to the mould of what a “boy” is expected to be. To combat these feelings, and the societal voices contributing to them, ‘Heretic’ says, “I’m here. I’m fierce. I am.”
