Delta Goodrem is back where she belongs, impressing audiences on stage as part of her ‘Bridge Over Troubled Dreams’ tour.
The national trek across the country has been a long time coming for the homegrown favourite; the tour was originally due to kick off early last year before Covid saw it postponed to late 2021.
With Covid still lingering and state borders still closed, Delta was forced to postpone yet again.
But finally, no doubt with much relief, she’s back on stage, performing for her adoring fanbase across the country.
And it’s time to party; Delta rolling out a smattering of hits and fan favourites from across her career, along with a selection of surprises, including a stunning, ever-so-apt cover of Queen’s ‘The Show Must Go On’.
She was in fine form at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena last night.
Delta kicked off with album track ‘The Power’, followed by one of her enduring hits, ‘Lost Without You’; her vocals dwarfed only by those of the somewhat tuneless young girls behind us.
What followed was a succession of Delta classics and recent singles including an upbeat western-themed ‘Billionaire’, ‘Solid Gold’ and a touching rendition of ‘Paralysed’, which came after an intro of images of Delta’s speech therapy, resulting from an operation in 2018.
Her intimate interlude, which also featured in a Facebook live stream, included a rendition of the ‘Neighbours’ theme (tipping her hat to her time spent on the enduring soap) and a version of Men At Work’s classic ‘Down Under’.
We were seriously impressed by her duet with George Sheppard on her classic hit ‘Almost Here’; their voices melded spectacularly and highlighted the strength of both vocals.
A swathe of Delta classics like the brilliant ‘Believe Again’, stunning ‘Out Of The Blue’ and her earlier hit ‘Not Me Not I’ were sadly truncated, leaving us wanting for more.
Delta closed, however, with a rousing rendition of her breakthrough hit ‘Born To Try’, affording the audience the chance to sing along and prove their vocal chops.
Barring the young girls behind us, it was a night of stellar vocals all ’round.
Sheppard warmed up the crowd brilliantly with their array of catchy chart weapons and pitch-perfect vocals and Delta followed it up with hers in a show littered with hits from throughout an enduring 20+ year career.
Any wonder why she’s a national treasure.
